One Book Meme and Other Things

I saw this meme at Bleeding Espresso the other day and knew I'd get around to it eventually. Since I'm in a time crunch to get a bunch of stuff done (including a couple of guest posts to be published soon at a blog near you) before I head out of town for a wedding this weekend, now seemed like the perfect time to take advantage a good old meme.

1. One book that changed your life: Bridge to Terabithiaby Katherine Paterson This book is the first book that I remember really affecting me emotionally. Not only did this book make mortality real to me, but it made me want to be able to tell a story that MOVED people. I loved books before this one, but when I read this book I wanted to DO that.

2. One book you’ve read more than once: To Kill a Mockingbirdby Harper Lee. Another book that had a profound effect on how I saw the world.

3. One book you’d want on a desert island: I don't think I can pick just one. Seriously. But if I have to, I'd have to copy Bleeding Espresso and say The Complete Works of Shakespeare. At least it would take me a while to get through.

4. One book that made you laugh: Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faithby Anne Lamott. Almost everything I've read of hers has made me laugh.

5. One book that made you cry: I already mentioned Bridge to Terabithia, and there have been many others, but I'll have to say Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

6. One book you wish you had written: Good in Bedby Jennifer Weiner. In fact, the whole time I was reading it I kept thinking, Why didn't I write this? It seemed like a story I could have told.

7. One book you wish had never been written: Can't think of a single one, although I'm sure there are some out there.

8. One book you’re currently reading: Ah, but there are so, so many right now. I've told you about a couple already. How about How to Write a Book Proposal by Michael Larsen

9. One book you’ve been meaning to read: Randomly picking one off my shelf...Gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson. There are at least two dozen more in my possession, not to mention the others I don't own.

What books are on your list?

In other news, I've got a new article up at Radiant Magazine Online: Getting Back to the Source.

For someone who claims to want to write I read very little. I used to read a bunch, namely when I lived in Boston and lived on the T and buslines...but no longer.

I always have a book 'in the wait', though, but it either needs to hook me right away, or be a part of the easy-readin', chick lit genre that can be banged out in a couple of days. So my turn at this meme will be a weak one.

Your comment on Good in Bed, 'why didn't I write this', is something I think all the time when flying those these quick, and usually satisfying, reads. I read Shopaholic and Sister (whatever it's called) and the whole time I thought to myself, Self, GET OFF YOUR ASS AND TRY!

Anyways, this comment is now very long :)

I'll attack this meme shortly.

I loved Good in Bed (which is why I was so disappointed with Certain Girls, I think).

I also enjoyed Eat, Pray, Love. Mind you, I'll cry with nearly every book I read. Even trashy, breezy fun stuff like Nora Roberts. Seriously, I cry at the drop of a hat. My husband finds it to be quite amusing.

34 Years - Believe me, these days I don't get nearly as much reading in as I used to, but if I wasn't spending so much time writing, I'd definitely read a lot more. :)

LA - I'm quite the crier, too. Movies, books, Hallmark commercials...it doesn't take much!

Bridge to Terabithia is one of my favorites. I still read it sometimes as an adult. In fact, when I was teaching 4th grade I read it out loud to my students every year, and inevitably cried in front of them.
Book that should not have been written: Sunday's at Tiffany's. My mom lent it to me, and I cannot for my life understand why it is on the bestseller list.
Currently reading- The Glass Castle.
On a desert island- Anne of Green Gables. Seriously, if that won't cheer me up, I don't know what will.

I recently read Between, Georgia by Joshilyn Jackson and really enjoyed it. Haven't read any of her other books yet though. And Good in Bed has been on my list for ages. I need to get it from the library.

Tiffany - I've read Bridge a few times myself, most recently last year. :) Thanks for sharing some of your list!

Felicia - Definitely recommending Good in Bed. Let me know what you think when you finally read it. I know how long it takes me to get to books on my list... :)
